Tragedy struck the Ogwashi-Uku community of Delta State on Tuesday as a final year female student of the Delta State Polytechnic, simply identified as Julia, was allegedly murdered by her cultist lover.

The deceased, who was in the department of Mathematics and Statistics, was murdered in her room in a private hostel off Polytechnic Road in Ogwashi-Uku.

According to one of her co-students in the hostel who spoke with SaharaReporters, the man, whose name has yet to be ascertained, had spent the previous night in the room of the deceased, and had stolen her ATM card.

"After her cultist lover had left the following day she received an alert of a N100,000 deduction from her bank account where she discovered her ATM card was missing. Not comfortable with the development, she went straight to her bathroom to take her bath. Immediately after that, she received another alert of N45,000 making it N145,000 that was [withdrawn] from her account by the unknown person.

"Before leaving for the bank, she complained to us [about] the strange development. Again, on her return from the bank where she went to complain, she told us the bank assured her that the culprit could only be known and arrested after going through their CCDC camera. She was told to go home and report back the following [day] before meeting her untimely death," the co-student said.

The source speculated that unknown to anyone in the hostel, the suspect sneaked into Julia's room and murdered her with a battle axe, locked the corpse inside the room and ran away with her keys.

"Not until the next morning when everybody became apprehensive of her whereabouts and we [had] to break her door where we saw her lifeless body with blood stains everywhere in the room. Immediately we raised the alarm and everybody in the area rushed down and the matter was reported to the Ogwashi-Uku Police Station," the source narrated

Repeated calls to the new Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniameka, were not answered. However, a source at the Ogwashi-Uku station who didn’t want to be identified confirmed the story, adding that the police and the bank are currently working around the clock to arrest the suspect, who is on the run.

SaharaReporters learned that the remains of the late Julia have since been buried in her home town.

Subscribers of the Global System of Mobile telecommunications across the country would pay more for data with effect from December 1, 2016, The PUNCH learnt on Monday.

Although the telecoms companies declined to speak on the matter, top management workers across the networks confirmed the story to our correspondent, saying that the directive was from the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior management employee of Etisalat Nigeria said, “The NCC issued the directive late last week on the orders of the Federal Government. We have not announced it yet because most of the major telcos have been meeting the NCC on how to reverse this policy, because it will be too harsh for Nigerians.

“However, we further gathered that the Federal Government took the decision having discovered that data rates are very low-priced in Nigeria, compared to other countries, including nearby African countries.

“The government might have also taken the decision given that Nigerian subscribers have been kicking against the proposed nine per cent Communication Tax, whose bill is currently in the National Assembly.”

Pleading not to be mentioned, an employee of MTN said, “What this means is that MTN, Airtel, Etisalat And Globacom will increase their data rates as from December 1, 2016. A data plan of N1,000 for 1.5 Gigabytes will now be increased to N3,000 at N1,000 per 500 Megabytes.”

In text messages sent out to its subscribers, MTN, Africa’s mobile telecommunications giant, confirmed that it had agreed to implement the directive of the NCC.

The MTN text read, “Dear customer, please be informed that from 1st of December, some MTN data tariffs will be increased to reflect the new rates set by the NCC for operators. Thank you.”

The PUNCH could not obtain an official response from the NCC at of the time of filing this report.

However, a representative of the commission said that the telecoms regulator was unaware of such plans by the operators, even as she said her bosses had claimed ignorance of the circulated message.

“We are unaware of it. I just asked my bosses; they are unaware. We will forward your query to MTN for appropriate attention,” she said over the telephone.

However, in a letter by the NCC to the operators sighted by our correspondent, the commission stated, “This rate will subsist pending the finalisation of the study on the determination of cost-based pricing for retail broadband and data services in Nigeria.

“In order to provide a level playing field for all operators in the industry, small operators and new entrants to acquire market share and operate profitably, small operators and new entrants are hereby exempted from the price floor for data services.”

It added, “For the avoidance of doubt a small operator is one that has less than 7.5 per cent market share and a new entrant is an operator that has operated less than three years in the market.

“All operators are to ensure that subscribers are not automatically migrated to pay-as-you-go platform.

“Also, note that effective date for the interim price floor is December 1, 2016.”

Reacting to the development, the President, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, Mr. Adeolu Ogunbanjo, said that the NCC representative was being economical with the truth.

He said that for MTN to have sent out millions of text messages to its subscribers “clearly shows that the NCC indeed issued the directive.”

Ogunbanjo, however, said that the association would resist the tariff hike, adding, “We will challenge it in court. We are going right away to set the machinery in motion. We are also going to do an urgent letter to the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, which we will drop in his e-mail box.

“Unfortunately, the notice is short; today is November 28, yet the order will take effect from December 1. It is not just good for broadband penetration, whatever the reason may be. It is against telecoms subscribers.”

According to him, data availability means more youth engagement because they use data to develop apps and build software.

“But with what the NCC has done, these boys who develop apps will be slowed down and limited. The cost of doing business will also increase,” he added.

Frank Darlington, the manager of Soccer Warriors Football Academy, Pen Cinema, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly sodomising three of his teenage players, in Agege, Punchng reports.

He was arrested last Thursday, after one of the victims reported him to the police. Darlington, 49, who hails from Imo State, allegedly took three footballers to his house on separate occasions after training sessions, and sodomised them.

Darlington’s wife and 3-year-old daughter, lived in Imo State, after the two got divorced in March 2016. The police said the suspect allegedly penetrated the victims’ anuses, and would be charged for sodomy. .

While confessing, Darlington said,

“It was in February 2015 that the rape started. I usually had sex with my boys just to play with them. It was romance. We had fun together. The last one I did was in July 2016, knowing that it could get me into trouble.

I slept with only three of my footballers. I have been coaching for about 12 years. The sex with the boys was not for any ritual. I only derived fun from it. I knew it was a crime and that was why I stopped this act since July. I pledged not to go back into this.”
One of the victims, Kehinde (pseudonym), told our correspondent that Darlington threatened him that he (Kenny) would die if he told anyone about the sodomy.

The 18-year-old said he was forced to tell his mother when Darlington made it a habit.

He said,

“He always had sex with me and with most of us. He started last year. The first time he approached me was after a training session. He said my performance was bad and I should meet him at home for a discussion.
When I went, he molested me. He did not use any protection. He did not give me any money, but he threatened that I would die if I told anyone. I cannot count how many times he had done this to me. I told my mother when I was tired of his abuse.”
Another victim revealed that a large number of footballers at the academy had withdrawn because “he always slept with 2 or 3 of us every week.”

Bournemouth forward Jordon Ibe who was once penciled down to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has been robbed at knife-point when thieves rammed his car just four days after Andy Carroll was threatened by gunmen.

The 20-year-old former Liverpool player had his watch stolen after his car was struck in Surrey Quays, south-east London, it has emerged. Scotland Yard said detectives were investigating the attack on Ibe, which took place near Surrey Quays Underground station at around 1.45pm on November 6.

Reports say that the assailants made off with the footballer's £25,000 Rolex. A Met Police spokesman said: 'One of the suspects threatened the victim with a knife before stealing his watch. The victim was not injured. 'At this early stage, officers are investigating whether the suspects intentionally collided with the victim's car.'

It is unknown what car the former Reds player was driving at the time of the incident which occurred this month ‒ although Ibe appears to be a car fanatic and has been pictured attending Mercedes car shows.

The Managing Director of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Olufunke Osibodu, has urged Nigerians not to expect any improvement in the power sector in the next five years.

Speaking at the 11th Annual Founder’s Day event of the American University of Nigeria in Yola, Saturday, Mrs. Osibodu said at least N250 billion is required annually to fix the country’s electricity sector.

“And we Nigerians need to understand that we cannot do it overnight, and in addition we have to pay for it,” said Mrs. Osibodu, while delivering the keynote speech titled ‘Beyond Oil: Sustainable Development for All Nigerians. “We need to be ready as citizens also, to accept and live with the pain that we have to go through, and allow time as our friends. “As Nigerians, often we are the ones that deceive our politicians.

The politicians believe that the only way to go is to promise everything immediately possible. Promise that everything is possible today so that they can get elected. But when you see that it is not, so we want to give them time and use time as our friends. “It is the same story for the power industry.

When I tell my friends, that forget any improvement for the next five years, they are scared, but that is the truth. We need minimum of five years to invest before we see results. “But very often, because Nigerians are impatient, we start pushing our governments and they start reversing good things they have done in various ways. So we need to be more patient.”

Mrs. Osibodu’s statements came despite the claim earlier in the year by Babatunde Fashola, the minister of Power, Works, and Housing, that the country would attain 10,000 megawatts electricity generation by 2019. Apart of challenges of generation, Nigeria also has problems of transmission and distribution of the generated electricity.

According to Mrs. Osibodu, Nigeria is currently producing two percent of the total electricity it requires. “In addition, in this country we have 32 million household population. In other words, 32 million houses by statistics. But on the national grid, only four million are officially customers of the various distribution companies.

“About 36 per cent of the power generation is lost either through commercial theft, illegal consumption, or non-payment of bills. But 14 per cent of that power is also lost through very poor network.

“In other words, the two percent that we have is even further played down. About 30 percent of the power, we all waste it, by forgetting to put out the light, many things that should not be turned on, and we pay for that wastage.”

A pregnant woman, identified only as Iya Abdulsalam, has been shot dead, while six others sustained gunshot injuries after hoodlums stormed Jebba Street, in the Oyingbo area of Lagos.

The gang, led by one Itakun, had gone to the area on Thursday, at about 9pm to attack members of a factional group at a drinking joint.

They were said to have shot into the air to announce their presence during which a stray bullet hit Iya Abdulsalam, two siblings – Gbenga and Olaoluwa – and four others.

The Punch gathered that the woman had visited her husband’s brother in the area and was in front of his shop when the bullet hit her.

She and other victims were rushed to a health centre in the community, where she was confirmed dead. Others were said to be responding to treatment.

An eyewitness, Toba Kamoru, said the incident created panic in the area as people scampered to safety, adding that one of the hoodlums was arrested by the police on Friday.

“There is a woman, who sells herbs and local gins at Cemetery, by Jebba Street; a lot of people usually gather around her in the evening. We were there when we suddenly heard gunshots. We all fled in different directions.

“It was when the dust had settled that I learnt that Iya Abdulsalam was shot dead. She sold paint on Lagos Island. She was pregnant. Her husband’s brother she came to visit is called Emir.”

A resident, who gave his name only as Henric, said he was returning from work when the incident happened. He said he could not explain how he got home in the ensuing chaos.

“I later learnt the hoodlums came for rival gang members. They thought their targets were at the joint. Unfortunately, it was innocent people who were trapped, especially the pregnant woman,” he added.

A trader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, urged the police to intensify raids on black spots in Oyingbo, saying residents are disturbed by incessant gang wars in the community.

The police spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the armourer of the gang, one Baba Jara, had been apprehended by the Denton Police Division.

She said, “At about 3pm on Friday, clues led the DPO, SP Saheed Quadri, to a notorious member of the gang and he was arrested. The suspect, known as Baba Jara, is the armourer of the gang.

“He confessed to being a member of late Sunday Terror gang. He said the gang, led by one Itakun, shot five persons on Jebba Street on Thursday, killing a woman. We shall flush all the hoodlums out."

A cleaner, Peter Oko, has narrated how he stole N5.675 million from the New Nyanya branch of Diamond Bank, where he worked.
The 29 year-old stated that he took the keys to the vault, stole the money and hid it in a carton, which he took home after the close of work.
The money was however recovered by the police, which said that the suspect had been charged to court.
Oko told Northern City News at the Nasarawa State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department in Lafia that he carried out the theft alone, saying, “As a cleaner, I knew where all the keys were kept.”
He added, “I single-handedly carried out the operation because I have been working as a cleaner in the bank for the past 10 years and my eyes had been on one of the keys to the vault, where the bank used to keep all its money.

“As a cleaner, my attention was not only on the keys, but on how I will carry out the operation successfully without being caught by either the security or any staff of the bank.”
The suspect said he stole the money without the knowledge of the bank workers, adding that he had access to all the foreign currencies in the bank as he knew where they were kept.
“As a cleaner, I knew where all the secret files were kept and where the bank kept its keys where you can have access to dollars, Nigerian currency and all other currencies.”
Oko blamed the economic situation for his action, stating that he had never been involved in a criminal act before now.
“The devil of economy recession pushed me into the crime; I have never committed a criminal act before, luck ran out on me and I was caught in the process,” he stated.
The state Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Bello, said the crime was reported to the police in October, 2016, by the bank, adding that the matter was then transferred from Karu Divisional Police Headquarters to the SCIID for investigations.

Facebook user, Mohammed Grema Adamu shared the story and photos. Read after the cut...

"A father of 3, commercial bus driver; Saminu Bara'u popularly known as Danlamiwas killed cold-blooded by a police officer in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State.
The incidence occured around 8pm of Tuesday 15th November 2016 whule the victim was sitted outside his residence in Maraban Jos when a team of police stormed the area in the name of patrol. Having fractured leg and being innocent, Danlami remain sitted as the police arrived. One Police Officer nicknamed KURA (literarilly mean Hyena) ordered Danlami to stand up and run pr he shoot him, which he calmly replied that he cannot run because his leg is fractured displaying his crutches. Unfortunately for Danlami, the barbaric for KURA shot him to dead (the pic). Immediately afte he shot Danlami, angry youths descended on KURA and were about to take jungle justice on him. It takes an intervation of some respected elders and a human right activist (name with-held) to rescue him.
The case has since been filed at Unguwan Sunusi Police Station and we learnt that KURA was transferred to State CID. Our fear is the usual, we don't want the case dead at arrival just because a Police Officer involved.
Let us stand up for justice! Let us think of his wife and 3 kids! The State Government should do something!! The IGP should ensure KURA is brought to book!!!
Keep sharing until justice is done. All we want is #Justice4Danlami.........
May his soul rest in peace."

A British businessman arrested on a BA flight for filming up a stewardess's skirt was let off with a £13 fine and allowed to walk off the same day, sources claim.

Married father-of-two Martyn Vaughan, 61, was flying First Class from Heathrow with British Airways and was arrested when he landed in South Africa.

But sources say he was wrongly charged with common assault, which allowed Vaughan, from Northamptonshire, to take a £13 'admission if guilt' fine and walk free.

And the arresting officer at Cape Town International Airport is said to have suddenly taken leave as police launched their investigation, assisted by British Airways.

A source told The Sun: 'No-one can find her. People in the commissioner's office are running around like blue-a***d flies trying to sort this out. It was a mistake.'

It was alleged that, after a few drinks, the father-of-two pushed the handset under the attendant’s uniform as she leaned over to serve another passenger.

Fellow passengers claim Mr Vaughan lit up his £6,000 First Class suite with the phone’s torch app before committing the assault.

Mr Vaughan, believed to be the MD of manufacturing consultancy firm Bradden Associates, was detained when the Flight BA0057 landed in South Africa.

In-flight staff including the captain were alerted and radioed ahead to police, who met the Airbus A380 jet on touchdown and armed officers arrested him in his seat.

He was banned from British Airways flights for life after the assault on the 26-year-old stewardess - said to be left 'distressed and devastated'.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old, Michael Atanda, for threatening to expose the nude pictures of four women he met on Facebook unless they paid money into his bank account.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Atanda was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad on Thursday.
The police said the suspect was initially arrested in 2015 for defrauding a woman of N700,000; adding that he was thereafter charged to court.
Our correspondent gathered that Atanda, a National Diploma holder in Computer Science from an institution in Lagos, allegedly blackmailed his four new victims after he had collected N121,000 from them.
The police said he told the victims that if they did not pay, he would leak their nude pictures on the social media.
In his statement to the police, the suspect, who said he had been impersonating as Segun Bayo on Facebook, added that his strategy was to add several ladies on Facebook and after two weeks, start chatting with them.
He said, “The picture on my Facebook account showed a young man, who was based in London. As part of my introduction to ladies, I told them I was a construction engineer and that my parents lived in Europe.
“After some time, I would lure them into sexual conversations during which I persuaded them to send their nude pictures to me. They usually sent the pictures.
“I usually pretended that I was interested in a serious relationship with them, and that very soon, I would be coming to Abuja on a business trip, during which I would see them.
“I also had some computer software that transformed my Nigerian telephone line into an international line.
“As soon as they had sent their nude pictures, I would come up with all manners of stories and I would begin to blackmail them.”
Atanda confessed that he made N121,000 from his latest victims.
He said, “As soon as they sent their nude pictures, I blackmail them. I have collected N121,000 from my latest victims.
“I collected N10,000 from the first woman, Funmilola; from Motunrayo, I collected N6,000, N5,000 from Joy and N100,000 from Lizzy.”
“It is true that I was jailed last year after fraudulently collecting N700,000 from a lady I met through a dating site. The case is still pending in court.”
The police said Atanda had 210 friends on his Facebook page, and over 195 were young ladies.
One of the women, Lizzy, was said to have reported Atanda to the police, while the other three victims were discovered during investigations.
They reportedly told the police that they paid the suspect so that he would not leak their nude pictures on the internet.
The police said Atanda had also opened a bank account in one of the commercial banks.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the police would carry out a thorough investigation into the case to aid prosecution.

The Head of the Igbogene Vigilance Committee, Chief MoneySweet Asomo, said the suspect was caught “red handed doing justice to the soup and food items stolen from a cafeteria owned by an Akwa Ibom State woman in the area.”

The shop owner was said to have stated that she had no money for police case and that it was better for her to let him go than involve the police in the matter.

But Handler's gone one better: she said she's already got a home ready.
"I did buy a house in another country just in case, so all of these people that threaten to leave the country and then don't, I will leave the country," she said in May on "Live With Kelly and Michael."

  • Barbra Streisand

The iconic singer may be headed down under. Streisand told "60 Minutes" in Australia that she was worried about the election results.
"I'm either coming to your country, if you'll let me in, or Canada," she said.

  • Lena Dunham

The "Girls" star seemed pretty firm in her assertion at the Matrix Awards in April that she is Vancouver-bound should Trump win.
"I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will," she said.

  • Ne Yo

The singer said he's planning to kick it with buddy (and Canadian) rapper Drake if Clinton loses.
"I'm moving to Canada straight away," he told TMZ. "Me and Drake gonna be neighbors if Donald Trump becomes president."

The Governing Council of the Osun State University, Osogbo, has terminated the appointment of Dr. Olabode Ojoniyi of the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Ikire Campus, caught on video having an amorous relationship with one of his students, Mercy Ikwue.
Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that the Governing Council headed by Mallam Yusuf Ali SAN, sacked the lecturer, who appeared nude  on a bed  in a hotel room and caressing Miss Ikwue.
A member of the Governing Council confirmed the sacking of Ojoniyi to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday.
He said, “The Council met last week and the report of the panel that investigated Ojoniyi’s amorous affair with the female student was deliberated upon. His appointment was terminated because that is the penalty stated in the Code of Conduct of Staff of Osun State University.”
Apart from the member of the Governing Council, three other lecturers including two professors confirmed to our correspondent that Ojoniyi had been sacked.
Part II articles 15 and 23  of the Code of Conduct for Staff and Students of UNIOSUN read, “ An academic staff shall not conduct himself/ herself in relation to students in such a manner that derogates from his status as a lecturer, examiner and adviser. Specifically, sexual harassment of students by (members of) staff is totally forbidden. Any (member of) staff found guilty of sexual harassment shall be dismissed from the service of the university and may be handed over to relevant state authority for prosecution.
“An academic (member of) staff shall not demand from students any gratification whether in cash or in kind including sexual gratification in the discharge of his/her lawful duties. Breach of this code shall warrant appropriate sanction ranging from warning to termination of appointment depending on the gravity of the offence.”
Ojoniyi’s sex act was captured in a video which is believed to have been surreptitiously recorded by the female student.
The female student was said to have been pressurised by Ojoniyi for sex and she eventually agreed and followed him to their agreed place with a laptop computer from which she pretended to be watching a movie,Things Fall Apart. Unknown to him, Miss Ikwue was actually recording their sexual activities.
Ojoniyi had accused one of the lecturers of the university, who was recently dismissed for an alleged misconduct as the person behind the drama. According to him, the lady was contracted to blackmail him. But Ojoniyi did not deny being the one in the video.
The video clip went viral afterwards and Ojoniyi, when contacted by our correspondent did not deny that he was the one in the video and did not say his image was manipulated. He only blamed his detractors for the incident.
The Acting Registrar of UNIOSUN, Bayo Shittu, who doubles as the secretary of the council, did not pick repeated calls put across to his telephone line.
He had yet to reply to the text sent to him to officially confirm the sacking as of the time of filing this report.
A professor at the university recently resigned his appointment over the alleged rape of a female student in his office.
Some lecturers and students of the university told our correspondent that the professor knew that he would be sacked if the case was investigated and he hurriedly resigned to prevent the embarrassment which would follow.
